With a small town feel and charm, Downingtown offers an abundance of opportunities to be out and active in the community.
The Downingtown Farmers Market kicks off each Spring and runs through Thanksgiving. Local Farms set up tables right in Kerr Park each Saturday from 9am – 1pm. The farmers market brings all the amazing fruits and vegetables grown in the area to a central location for your shopping convenience.
From end to end, Struble trail is 2.6 miles of relatively flat paved terrain. Popular for walking, jogging, and biking, Struble Trail runs along the Brandywine Creek into the center of Downingtown. Struble trail has several off shoots that connect it to local neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Uwchlan Woods and Welsh Ayres. The trail has been used as a convenient commuters path to work. Several picnic areas along the trail offer families and friends a place to sit and take in the beautiful scenery.
Both novice and experienced fishermen alike can enjoy casting into the Brandywine – with several trails that lead right from the paved path to the edge of the creek. There are four parking lots situated along the trail making it easily accessible for those carrying fishing gear. Park rangers have a strong presence on the trail – both by bike and by foot. They are always happy to stop and chat about the history and beauty of the trail.
Open for year round enjoyment, Marsh Creek State Park is truly a gem in Downingtown. Situated on just over 1,700 acres – 535 of which are water – Marsh Creek offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors. In the summer, bring your own kayak and boat, or rent one right on site. Paddle boarding classes are a frequent during the summer months, and sailboaters take advantage of the natural windiness at the lake. Fishing is available year round – although ice thickness is not monitored and is for use at your own discretion.
Swimming is not permitted in Marsh Creek, however there is a public pool available for guests to enjoy. There are snack bars both poolside and lakeside as well as changing areas and restrooms.
There are 18 miles of hiking trails that are clearly marked and maintained. Mountain biking and horseback riding are available on 11.5 miles in the park, and offer spectacular views of the lake and rolling hills.
During the winter months, enjoy sledding, cross country skiing, and ice skating. Park rangers make continual rounds of the park and are easily accessible as needed.
If you love gardening and are looking for others who enjoy in that passion, the Garden Class of the Women’s Community Club of Uwchlan is a great place to join. Meetings are held once a month at the historic Uwchlan Meeting house. The meeting house was built in 1756, and previously used as a library, hospital for soldiers during the revolutionary war and schoolhouse. Flower shows and plant sales occur throughout the year with the Garden Club.
An exciting addition to the Downingtown area is Urban Air Trampoline Park. Set to open in May 2016, it is located right next to the Palace Bowling Alley on Lancaster Avenue. Perfect for birthday parties, dodgeball and just a fun day out – Urban Air will be a perfect addition to the area.
Kerr Park is located in the heart of Downingtown and is a point place for events such as the farmers market, Good Neighbor Day Festival, 4th of July Fireworks and various parades throughout the year. The playground is known as “The Sky’s the Limit” playground and is suitable for children of all abilities.
The Downingtown Library is adjacent to Kerr Park and the building was completely renovated in 2014. The library offers programs for preschool and school age children throughout the year to encourage reading and other tools for learning. There are also programs for adults such as the NY Times crossword puzzle group and book clubs.
Located near a hub of shopping offered in Downingtown, Bell Tavern is a perfect place to let the kids run and stretch their legs – even in the hot summer months.
Across from the popular Wegmans shopping center, Bell Tavern is a must see. The playground is nicely padded with rubber tire mulch, and there are many obstacles and slides for the kids to explore. There is a paved walking loop around the park, an open field for having a catch or kicking a ball, tennis courts, pavilions for lunch, basketball courts, sand volleyball court and even an enclosed area for playing hockey. In the summer Bell Tavern offers a “splash pad” – an area where sprinklers run throughout the day and kids can cool off in between playing on the jungle gyms.
Vertical Extreme is an indoor rock climbing facility that offers options for ages 3+. Memberships are available as well, or stop in to try it out! Experienced staff is on site for training and assisting as needed. Vertical Extreme is located right in the center of Downingtown – close to the Wegmans shopping center.

These programs are for young and the young at heart. DARC offers discount tickets to local movie theaters and attractions such as Hershey Park, Camden Aquarium, Diggerland USA, and ski resorts. The savings are upwards of 20-30% off regular admission prices.
